The Taw and Torridge Estuary Forum have reported a rather worrying item concerning the old landfill site on Northam Burrows in the latest edition of their always interesting newsletter. As I have said before the old tip may well be a toxic ‘time bomb’ as it is full of noxious materials that could, if the pebble ridge is breached and the Burrows drowned (again), be spread along North Devon’s coastline. The Senior Waste Management Officer of Devon County Council Adrian Midddlewich has been inspecting the site with a former Burrows Ranger who indicated there may be live ammunition buried beneath one of the earliest sections of the landfill over which the present day access road passes. Nothing, however, is going to happen until Torridge give their permission to the County to drill boreholes down to discover the true extent of the buried material – let’s hope they don’t hit anything dangerous.
Asda’s new building is beginning to take shape, and there has been some movement over the road works that will be put in place before the store opens. Following discussions between Asda and Devon County Council there is to be a formal exhibition/consultation process and some 1200 leaflets are to be delivered to all residents on the roads affected, mainly Clovelly Road and Meddon Street, with a final decision as to what will be put in place being taken on March 19. When this was announced at a recent town council meeting various points were raised by the members. Councillor Tony Inch enquired whether any improvement work was to be carried out at the junction of Meddon Street and Old Town – but was told that this length of road hadn’t been included in the agreement between Asda and the Plans Committee of Torridge District Council. Part of the scheme includes substantially extending the pavement just outside the fish and chip shop in Meddon Street and also on the opposite side about 20 yards up to create an S-shaped road section designed to slow cars down. Councillor Steve Clarke, however, reckoned this would only see drivers speeding up to get through and thus beat any traffic approaching from the opposite direction. Following on from this I did point out that it could cause problems for people trying to turn into Victoria Grove and reminded councillors that the scheme to demolish the Grenville Nursing Home and put in some 40 units of housing would lead to a very large ‘new’ flow of traffic out onto Meddon Street exactly at this point. Presumably all these concerns will be raised and examined at the Consultation.
