It is good to see so many examples around the town now of shops and cafes selling or serving Fairtrade products. The town council took a great interest in this and now sources such items wherever it can at its functions. At the liaison meeting mentioned above Torridge’s Chief Executive John van der Laarschot was asked whether the district council did the same – and replied that his council had a rough rule that locally sourced products were used in the first instance and where this was not possible Fairtrade items were used second. Given the recent rain, of course, is seems that local produce may not be that plentiful!
Talking of the rain – and who hasn’t? I do think we have been very lucky here in Bideford. I was called out to an area where rain was pouring off the road and going, via a dropped pavement put in for disabled access, into some front yards but the town has escaped the massive flooding it used to experience. This, of course, is down to two developments – the flood defences along the Quay and the Kenwith dam. Thank goodness the vociferous minority who delayed the Quay defences for so long and at such cost were finally overcome as I dread to think what might have happened if the defences had not been in place. As to the Kenwith dam the continued building at Londonderry and the proposed new housing estates on the Grenville College land along Abbotsham Road cannot help the situation as both will see higher and faster volumes of run-off all of which ends up in the Kenwith valley. Let’s hope it is sunnier by the time you read this.
