At its recent meeting the town council planning committee voted to pass plans to demolish the Grenville Nursing Home in Meddon Street and replace it with 42 new flats and houses. We did, however, make three provisos; that the entrance to the site be wider than the developers envisaged, that the layout of the accommodation be altered to preserve two large trees that have Tree Preservation Orders on them – and the ‘Financial Appraisal in Viability’ not be accepted. This claims that owing to the steepness of the land the costs of development rule out any provision of affordable homes - which we regarded as nonsense, indeed if it was accepted every developer would be presenting the same story and that would be the end of Torridge’s efforts to supply affordable homes for local people.
As one who wholeheartedly welcomed the introduction of the smoking ban it is interesting to see what it has led to. You only have to walk through Bideford to see the groups of sad looking smokers standing outside the pubs furiously puffing away. When the colder weather sets in where will they go? Rather more seriously many of these smokers have been taking their drinks out with them – even though large areas of central Bideford are meant to be zones where consumption of alcohol outside is banned. I understand that the local police have been turning a blind eye whilst the initial transition associated with the ban has been occurring – but will soon be cracking down on those smokers seen carrying drinks whilst on the pavement.
