Readers may recall me commenting on the application by a London based developer to build 12 houses on a piece of back land behind Lime Grove which would involve the demolition of an end-terrace house. This was, quite correctly I believe, turned down by the local Planning Committee but, as expected, the applicant is now appealing and objections in writing are being invited from interested parties. Such developments have to be weighed up on their particular merits (or lack of them) and in case people feel Torridge is being too negative over these (they also turned down a similar development in Coronation Road recently) then you only have to look around to see where new houses or flats are being built right in the town. The warehouse conversion behind Clinton Cards in the High Street, the new flats development in Mill Street behind Getset Designs and the large new estate off of Meddon Street all show that the council is in favour of ‘in-town’ building – where it fits the social and physical geography of the site. We cannot allow a free-for-all with speculative buildings going up on every large garden/open space – but careful planning should see in-filling where it is suitable.
The transfer of Torridge’s council houses to Tarka Housing is now proceeding apace and the group has issued various newsletters to its new tenants. All good stuff and I am all in favour of keeping people informed but I was rather puzzled to read that ‘As part of the communication strategy from Tarka Housing the Shadow Board [currently running the show] approved the development of a brand identity.’ Put simply a graphic designed has been hired to produce a logo based on a survey ‘to identify preferences in terms of colours, phrases, images’ etc. I am not a fan of such things and given the recent debacle over the Olympics logo I suspect my view will be shared by quite a few people. No costings for producing this logo are given – personally I would rather the money was spent on improving the tenants’ housing, this after all was the only reason we councillors voted for the transfer in the first place.
