The presence of traffic lights on the old Bridge and the digging up of the pavement as part of the repair scheme is, I hear, going to last about 10 months. The temporary lights will soon be replaced by more permanent ones which will stay for the duration of the work. That they will eventually be removed is good news as many locals pointed to the presence of lights at the western end of the Bridge as one of the contributing factors to the catastrophic collapse of 2 archways in 1968. Lorries brought to a halt on the structure, it was claimed, were weakening it through the engine vibrations. These lights may be going but there has still been no news about proposals to provide some sort of crossing at the eastern end where pedestrians still take their lives in their hands when trying to get on to the Bridge. Perhaps the temporary lights currently deployed could be put aside for this crossing to test out its feasibility?
The district council’s Members’ Grants Scheme is now up and running. Simply put councillors have been allotted £2000 each to help ‘worthy schemes’ within their own wards – which precludes any that are for personal, political or religious ends. Schemes must also display community support even though, for example, Bideford town council or similar parish/town councils cannot apply. Northam councillor Sam Robinson caused a chuckle when he requested that a moratorium on such grants be brought in for some period before any elections – obviously he doesn’t trust his fellow councillors not to try and ‘buy’ votes – perish the thought! If any groups out there want to apply for some of this money then in the first instance you should contact your ward councillor who can provide the necessary (and I am assured very simple) paperwork.
