This month’s town council meeting began with the presentation of plaques bearing Bideford’s coat of arms to various retiring councillors as a small token of gratitude for their work while in office. The district council do things a little differently – lose or vacate your seat and you become a non-person (unless you are a certain ex-Leader if course). As William Isaac remarked when accepting his plaque ‘All I got from Torridge was a letter demanding the return of my council car park pass.’
It’s not often you hear councillors really speaking their minds – usually they are rather circumspect over what they say but County Councillor Hugo Barton recently let rip over the embarrassingly long saga of the new glass ‘ends’ being fitted to the bus-stops on the Quay. The contractors seem to be very tardy in doing the job and as Cllr.Barton remarked at a recent town council meeting he found ‘the incompetence of the contractors absolutely incredible’ Whatever you think of the outburst it does highlight the fact that sometimes it isn’t the councillors to blame when things don’t go as smoothly as we would wish.
