At this month’s town council meeting we heard from the local police that Automatic Number Plate Reading equipment has been deployed locally to target those uninsured, MOT-less and ‘suspicious’ cars in the area. As a result a lot of on-the-spot fines have been levied and some 16 vehicles seized and impounded. Given the problems that follow from, for example, the uninsured being involved in crashes this can only be a good thing. Interestingly the police are now bringing in mobile CCTV (not helmet mounted) and specially trained groups of police to tackle alcohol related incidents in Bideford. Our problems are no worse than anywhere else but it is nice to know that action is being taken to counter the anti-social elements in our society – and given the new powers Torridge have to licence/close down public houses that encourage drunkenness we should see some good results.
Bideford has its share of run down buildings and I have often drawn attention to them – but as with so many things like this the council finds its hands our tied. How welcome, therefore, to se the wonderfully imposing Queen Anne’s Buildings in High Street presenting a complete refurbished façade to the world. With two obvious exceptions these town houses which date, I think, from around 1895 have exhibited a rather run down appearance. Work has, however, been continuing over the last 6 months or so to restore them to their former glory – and the High Street is looking all the better for it. I understand that at least one other eyesore is soon to be tackled. Let’s hope that sooner rather than later all the sadly neglected buildings in the town are improved.
