One of the most irritating things in Bideford (and every other town and village) is the mindless graffiti that disfigures many buildings. Owners of such properties have painted over the obscenities and ‘tag’ names only to have them eventually reappear. At the last town council meeting I suggested the council put aside a sum of money to pay to have such graffiti quickly painted over every time it appears in the hope that the so-called ‘artists’ will give up or grow up. Since then our Town Clerk has been in contact with Julian Roskilly, the County Highways Superintendent for Bideford who has offered to supply a special spray which removes graffiti simply. The council will then use anti-graffiti paint to render the affected surface ‘safe’ from graffiti vandals. We do not have a start date as yet and obviously this removal will only be done with an owner’s consent but I hope everyone will agree. Having said that I do have a soft spot for some of the ‘designed’ graffiti such as the ‘rose’ and the ‘half moon’ that have appeared around the town. Once again, however, consistency demands we clear all daubs – or none at all.
It was nice to visit the recent French market held on the Quay – there wasn’t a huge number of stalls but many hundreds of people were attracted. I didn’t recognize a lot of some so presumably they had been drawn into the town, certainly the Quayside cafes and pubs seemed to be doing a thriving trade – as were the stall holders even though prices for the produce on offer seemed fairly high. Of course most of the success I suspect was down to the weather in that it wasn’t raining for once. If the French did bring good weather with them then let them come every weekend.
