The recession seems to be well and truly with us now – and the first tangible signs are appearing in Bideford. For several months now anyone looking at the property listings advertising commercial sales cannot help but have noticed the number of the town’s public houses up for sale. Some say that they have been badly hit by the smoking ban but I think the malaise goes far deeper than that. To pubs we can now add estate agents. Anyone going down Bridgeland Street will have seen the very sad notice on the frontage of Bairstow Eves which announces the office’s closure (along with that of the South Molton branch) owing to a mixture of personal and economic difficulties. One wonders how many more estate agents will be closing? Never the most popular of professions they do at least occupy shops and add to the street scene. The opening of a Bideford Asda and the projected opening of an East-the-Water based Tesco will not help the smaller shops who are already struggling for survival. If I sound pessimistic about the future it is because I am – though I will keep my fingers crossed.
