Only four years or so after voting to demolish the old toilets fronting Victoria Park Torridge has finally decided to go ahead. A planning application to do this has just come before the town council plans committee and, needless to say, was passed unanimously. This clears the way for the Town Band to go ahead and submit their plans to construct a new band room on the site. Having first suggested this some years ago when I was last Mayor you can imagine how happy I am to see some progress at last! I would add that the committee did suggest that the pillars in the present structure either be re-used, or, if this is impossible, then they are replicated in the new building. Incidentally the demolition application also covers the small shelter near the paddling pool which has been suffering from graffiti sprayers for some years now.
The town council has a new Tourism group which has some big ideas. At our last meeting several weeks ago we agreed to push for formal twinning with Manteo in the USA. Their council met on 5 November to ratify this decision – which is rather odd given that they thought the twinning agreement was already in place but there we go! Their strong historical links to us make this twinning a really nice idea. Unfortunately they were hoping to travel to North Devon next year to cement this link but we heard that the current economic situation is just as bad in North America as it is here and it seems likely they will have to delay their visit until 2010. This will, of course, be the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and I suggested this would give us a strong double celebration.
The group’s other large idea was to set up a new Visitor/Maritime History Centre. Readers may feel the current Tourist Information Centre in the Burton and the Appledore Maritime Museum fill these roles but Bideford wants its own version. Several properties have already been looked at but found wanting. The favourite would be the current Library building which Devon county council are looking at leaving. Given the indecision over a possible Unitary council and the disappearance of Devon this move may or may not happen – and even if it does it will be quite a long time before anything occurs. Whether the town council go ahead with their plans or not has yet to be seen.Website designed by Jon Hooper
