I make no apology for returning to the Bideford regeneration Initiative as it constantly comes up at council meetings. At this month’s town council councillor Andy Powell, who is currently running it, said he was very frustrated over the degree of pessimism some people had expressed over their plans. The Mayor did suggest that the BRI was trying to do too much and should concentrate on just a few specific schemes in order to get something delivered – a reference to it having been going some 5 years now without completing anything. Councillor Powell replied that the ‘Master Plan’ for 5 major sites should be ‘put to bed’ this year although he agreed that the ‘Plan’ should have been completed 2 years earlier – a problem he explained was equally due to Torridge and the Environment Agency. Unfortunately the Mayor came back saying she was ‘very concerned’ at the non-delivery of even small projects adding ‘If we cannot do anything then we might as well all go home.’ Part of our frustration stemmed from the fact that councillors, having been ‘sworn to secrecy’ over the plans were astonished to read about the highly contentious projected move of the Football Club from the Sports Ground to the Cattle Market being discussed freely in the Journal by a senior officer of Torridge. Indeed councillor Emma Farrington was very annoyed at this especially as such ‘leaks’ tended to raise expectations – which left people feeling let down if they never came to fruition. Councillor Powell said he would go back to the BRI and ‘bang some heads together’ and ‘read the riot act’ to anyone caught ‘leaking’. The town council will be asking Torridge what is going on here and I will let you know the answer.
