Bideford’s two new county councillors Sam Robinson and Alison Boyle attended the monthly town council meeting to give us an update on what is happening at County Hall in Exeter – including the increase in the cost of the new Bideford College and on-going problems with ‘road calming’ at Clovelly Road. I have noted previously that both Sam and Alison live outside of Bideford but as Alison pointed out she has a long Bideford heritage pointing out ‘I am almost a Bidefordian’. Personally I will support anyone who pushes the town’s interests and both promised us they would be ensuring Bideford ‘gets its fair share’ of county funds and attention. On this basis town councillors look forward to working with our new representatives.
I actually like the traditional aspects of life in Bideford – amongst which I would include the trappings of the Mayor and the more arcane ‘officers’ of the council. Among these are our two Beadles who accompany the Mayor on formal occasions dressed in eighteenth-century style gowns with hats to match carrying the very historic borough maces – and on more informal occasions act as chauffeur to dinners and meetings. For some years Peter Darby served as one of these officers but he has now resigned and as a mark of respect the council presented him with a plaque at this month’s council meeting showing the town’s heraldic arms. Returning thanks Peter briefly talked about this most odd of jobs quipping ‘The hours are sometimes awkward but the meals are fantastic.’
