The new Bideford School is steadily progressing. Recently Veronica Matthews, my ex-pupil who is now head of the College, approached me in my role as the current chairman of the Bideford Bridge Trust to see if any grants were available for certain ‘extras’ that the government wouldn’t be providing. After long discussion the Trust has decided to give the College £1/2 million – the largest single grant it has ever given in its 700 years history. We have requested that the money is used to enlarge the currently planned 4-bay hall to one of 5 or even 6 bays – with the intention that the new hall is used both for school events and as a long-needed public hall for Bideford. In addition the money will go towards providing a modern stage along with a new sports pavilion for the school playing fields at Moreton Park.
Very few towns have a charity like the Bridge Trust and though I am obviously biased I reckon Bideford should be extremely grateful for the existence of the Trust. I would add that at the same meeting we decided on this grant we also gave £35,000 in 70 bursaries to Bideford students going on to university degrees. The Trust may have a very long past but no-one can accuse it of not looking to the future.Website designed by Jon Hooper
