Anyone coming out of Barnstaple cannot fail to have noticed that the last roundabout on the Link Road before travelling to Bideford has been ‘adopted’ by various local businesses who have agreed to pay for the maintenance of the decorative vegetation planted on it. Councillor Brian Lacey has been approached with a proposal from some Bideford based firms to ‘take over’ the roundabout where Manteo Way meets the Alverdiscott Road. As he pointed out at our recent council meeting this would be very welcome as the vegetation in this area has never actually been cut! The town council are going to follow up this idea with the county council (who look after our roads) – and it would be nice to think other firms could help beautify other roundabouts – Asda at Abbotsham Cross for example?
The ‘credit crunch’ or whatever we call it is already biting deep in Bideford where most building sites seem to have stopped work and shops are beginning to close – I hear rumours that another 4 may just be clinging on to have the ‘Christmas rush’ before they close. Sadly new supermarkets in and around the town will not help much in keeping the town centre healthy and alive. Not all the news is bad, however, in that one enterprising gentleman has opened up a new shop called the ‘Banyan Gallery’ in Mill Street. Not just a shop but also a holistic treatment centre it is an interesting addition to the town’s shops and I wish them luck in these hard times.
