The dissatisfaction of many Bidefordians with their local bus services surfaced at a recent council meeting. Councillor Tony Inch demanded to know why so many routes in Bideford were served by double-deckers which were both fuel hungry and rarely seemed to be needed in terms of numbers of passengers being carried. Councillor Brian Lacey also noted that such large vehicles were actually damaging road surfaces in some areas quoting Cliveden Road at East-the-Water as a glaring example. Apparently such buses were old, second-hand ones from cities that were spending their last days in Bideford which the bus companies used as cheap alternatives to buying new, more suitable vehicles. Councillor Lacey had been informed that the county council were talking to the companies in an effort to get smaller, more user-friendly buses introduced into the town – and as the county subsidise many of the routes this approach may bear fruit but we will have to wait and see.
With constant warnings ringing ion our ears that we, as a nation, are not taking enough exercise I was intrigued to hear about a series of ‘Walk & Talk’ sessions being organised in the town. The sessions which ‘are for people who would like to get more active through walking, and also enjoy a good chat at the same time’ will begin from the Café du Parc in the Burton Art Gallery. The route s will only traverse level areas and afterwards participants will be able to purchase drinks in the café with a 20% discount. The first session will start from the café on Wednesday 22nd April at 10.30 a.m. and at the same time for the next two weeks. The initiative is being run by Natural England and is one of over 400 such schemes in the country – what a nice way to both stay fit and meet new people.
