Every 3 months or so Bideford town council meets with Torridge District
Council to discuss items of joint interest. The latest of these get-togethers
saw 15 subjects on the agenda ranging from ‘Missing plaques’ in
Victoria Park to questions about the trustee administration of King George
V Playing Fields in the town.
Some of the more interesting points that came out were:
that the rubbish collection vehicles currently based at Westcombe
depot are soon to be re-located elsewhere – with 3 sites being
looked at.
efforts to introduce recycling boxes into the town centre last year
generated a very low level of support with only about 6 households
taking up the offer.
Torridge pays more out than it gets in its role as trustee of the
King George Playing Fields – and councillors can act as trustees
without having to set up an arms-length organisation.
Torridge are currently examining their budget for next year – and
priorities are to be based on the views of a ‘Citizens’ Panel’.
The last time this was tried Arts and Culture came bottom of the priorities
list – so expect ‘challenging’ settlements for the
Burton Art Gallery and Museum and the various other museums in the
area.
The next such meeting will be on Monday 2nd April at 6 p.m. in the Town
Hall – I mention this as everyone there seemed to be a councillor
or a paid officer of one or other of the councils – and yet the
questions and answers pointed to some important long-term implications
for the town.
