Well Bideford has its Christmas lights up – a little early for many people but others like to see them. If they look the same as last year then your eyes are not deceiving you as they are the same. Following a long but ultimately successful legal battle with the suppliers the town council is planning to improve them next year. Such displays do, however, raise the question – for how much longer can we ‘waste’ energy in this way? The question actually breaks down into two parts – is it right to use electricity for such displays, and who should bear the cost given the increasing costs of energy? The obvious next question of course is should the ever more extravagant Christmas lights on private houses be encouraged? I know the counter argument is that some of these displays raise money for charity but is that reason enough to encourage both light pollution and the wastage of energy? I look forward to some angry letters beginning ‘Dear Killjoy’!
One of the great glories of this area is Westward Ho! beach and Northam Burrows. Both need careful management if they are to remain unspoilt – but a lot of people seem very cavalier in their attitude to their conservation. A recent meeting of the Northam Burrows committee which runs them heard from local observers of a whole raft of misdemeanours which range from model car racing on the Tip road to illegal overnight camping through kite buggies and trollies on the Burrows to sheep worrying by uncontrolled dogs. The committee has demanded action by the Park Rangers – but what a pity some thoughtless people still seem to be so casual with such a natural treasure.
