After the town and district council elections on May 3rd there are going to be a number of new faces in the council chamber, given that quite a few serving councillors have announced they will be stepping down. Of interest, perhaps, will be the leaflets of those councillors standing for re-election. Members of the present Conservative/Independent coalition who run Torridge District Council will be faced with a problem of how to disassociate themselves from the poor public perception of the Torridge leadership over the last 4 years yet still win votes this time around. At the last election the great success story was the election of 9 Community Alliance candidates but within weeks the group splintered and disgruntled members left amidst recriminations and allegations of underhand dealings – not something the public takes kindly to. The Lib-Dems are still embarrassed by having their ex-leader publicly branded as a ‘bully’ whilst Labour have had no councillors for any seat in Torridge over the last 4 years. As to me, the only Green Party councillor, well if you read this weblog you will know my stance on council business so I won’t say anything else. I predict that it will be an interesting campaign.
Well, well, after all the fuss over what might happen to Bideford Long Bridge Devon County Council have gone out to tender and have been so horrified by the prices for repairing it they are now apparently revisiting the old idea of building a new bridge upstream. This may or may not be good news for those keen to see East-the-Water grow but it doesn’t actually solve the on-going need for repairs on the old bridge. I just hope that the County do not opt for a ‘bodge’ job to save money – the old Bridge is Bideford and Bideford is the Bridge.
