A letter to the North Devon Gazette & Advertiser from Green Party
officer Jon Hooper, Oct 2005
I agree with environmentalist Professor James Lovelock when he says
we are "moving rapidly towards irreversible global warming".
In your story "Scientist's global warning" on October 5th,
Lovelock says the only practical solution is nuclear power. I would
expect then, to see respected environmental organisations such as Friends
of the Earth, WWF and Greenpeace agreeing with his conclusion. But
none of them do. I wonder why their research has lead them to the opposite
conclusion: that new nuclear power would endanger our health, would
not solve Climate Change, and would drain money away from more effective
solutions?
Lovelock goes on to say that within seven years we could reach the "tipping
point" beyond which Global Warming becomes irreversible. So could
new nuclear power be built within seven years? No chance at all, according
to the Department of Trade and Industry, who confirm it would take
a good fifteen years to get any new nuclear power stations up and running.
If new nuclear power stations were to be built on sites such as Yelland
and, forty miles away, Hinkley, has anyone considered the effect of
rising sea levels? These sites are only a few feet above sea level,
and it would be ironic to see them drowned by storm surges in fifteen
years' time just after they were built.
