Green Party PoliciesNorth Devon Green Party Manifesto for North Devon & Torridge National Green Party Manifesto 2005-2010 National Green Party Manifesto for a Sustainable Society North Devon Green Party's Manifesto for North Devon & TorridgeA Green vote stresses the importance of ‘local’A GREEN AGENDA puts life back into local communities. We aim to provide affordable social housing for local people as well as more encouragement and opportunities for young people to stay in the area. We will tackle second-home ownership so that more homes are owned by people who live here year-round. We feel it is very important to maintain vibrant local communities with a balanced mixture of homes, shops and small businesses. A GREEN AGENDA gives far greater support to farmers markets and organic farming. We will promote good food which is grown locally, and encourage local shops rather than supermarkets, which take money from the area and generate traffic and ‘food miles’. We will put more money into better local services. Our local playgrounds and parks need upgrading for the enjoyment of all ages. We need to provide skate parks and dedicated graffiti walls in safe areas for young people. A Green vote aims for Zero WasteTo make it easy for people to recycle their cans and wrappers when they’re out and about, we will place recycling bins alongside every litter bin. For householders, we will supply cost-price compost bins for recycling organic materials and introduce an incentive for using real nappies – disposable nappies constitute around 5% of domestic waste. We want to put pressure on supermarkets and fast food outlets to use reusable and recyclable packaging and we support the taxing of disposable plastic bags – all shopping bags should be “bags for life”. Trade waste – such as bottles from pubs – continues to be dumped, making a mockery of householders’ efforts to recycle. We need incentives to encourage more businesses to recycle. We will support and subsidise new business ventures that reuse waste materials. A Green vote encourages a safer townA GREEN AGENDA tackles the root of crime by addressing social issues: tackling poverty and strengthening the sense of community. We will also recruit more community police officers and expect a more visible police presence. Let's have more bobbies on bikes! We need to work with pub owners and use the new licensing laws to help make the streets safer at night for all who wish to use them. We will promote live music to boost our local culture, to provide a focus for young people and to move away from binge drinking, noise pollution and antisocial behaviour. Car parks should be free in the evenings and on Sundays, to free up street parking spaces in the town centre for residents. We will remove the recently introduced car parking charges for disabled people. We will propose park and ride schemes situated outside our major towns to effectively relieve congestion and pollution within the towns, making them safer, healthier and happier places for pedestrians and residents. A speed limit of 20mph in all towns and villages will make our streets safer for everyone. There will be an emphasis on safe cycle routes and more parking for bicycles. A Green vote encourages sustainable tourismCurrently the vast majority of tourists arrive in North Devon by car. Cars are cluttering up our rural roads, bringing unwanted congestion to our small coastal villages and making life unpleasant for permanent residents and tourists alike. A GREEN AGENDA will focus on promoting alternatives to car use wherever possible. Cheaper and easier public transport links, park and ride 'beach bus' schemes with buses adapted to accommodate surfboards in coastal areas. There will be an emphasis on safe cycle routes and lower speed limits in villages. We must protect the natural features of our coastal villages, for example promoting local skills for managing hedgerows and keeping the Burrows clean. Our coastal villages must remain desirable places for permanent residents. A Green vote tackles Climate ChangeA GREEN AGENDA recognises the effects Climate Change will have on local communities: we need to be prepared for more severe flooding, summer droughts and rising sea levels. To tackle Climate Change, A GREEN AGENDA promotes renewable energy locally, including wind, solar, biomass, wave and tidal power. We will encourage council grants for solar systems and energy-saving measures such as insulation and solar water heating, making them compulsory for new homes. Greenhouse Gas emissions from cars are continuing to increase; we will tackle this by promoting and improving other transport alternatives such as trains and buses, and providing better cycle tracks and cycle parking. We can also reduce car journeys by bringing jobs and services closer to people’s homes, saving people's time and saving emissions. Our support of local food production will help to reduce “food miles” and effective reuse and recycling policies will help save the energy used in manufacturing new products.

"For the past 5 years , the big three parties have followed agendas of privatise and pollute which have left CO2 levels soaring, local economies decimated and public services sold off to profiteering private companies.Meanwhile, successive Governments' neglect of the public transport network has left essential services out of reach to many. "The Green Party proposes real change, such as prog ressive tax reforms that will raise billions for public services, and £30 bn - saved from scrapping the Government's roadbuilding scheme - to rebuild and repair Britain's public transport network." "Meanwhile we will use money from eco-taxes to invest in the renewable energy industry, and create more skilled manufacturing jobs." "Green Party policies are politics for people all about reforging the links between government and the community. They are about recognising that we only have this planet and it must meet our needs as well as those of generations to come. Only the Greens are at the forefront of the struggle to create a world based on the principles of peace, justice and sustainability." Manifesto for a Sustainable SocietyThe Manifesto for a Sustainable Society is the core Green Party policy document.
