Cllr
Miranda Cox

I grew up near Taunton in Somerset and moved here nine years ago to
marry my husband. I have a BA Hons in Law, have done voluntary work in
London with homeless people and have trained as an acupuncturist and
also in mediation. I'm qualified with a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy
and currently practice psychotherapy and counselling part-time. I have
also planted a woodland (with a lot of help) and with my husband grow
organic vegetables. We have solar panels on our roof. I love living in
this area and swimming in the sea in the summer.
I have served on Northam Town Council for four years and have spent
many hours helping to write and design our Parish Plan to map out the
future for this area. I am on the Burrows Committee and in the Sustainability
Group where a colleague and I have visited all the schools and seen what
wonderful creative work the children and teachers do there. We hope to
give grants to them for projects like solar panels, composting, hedge
and tree planting and wildflower/vegetable gardens. I have also been
a representative on the Citizens Advice Bureau committee.
I speak out at Planning meetings against inappropriate development. I
have lobbied Torridge on many issues including the need for more affordable
homes, eco-friendly housing which reduces bills as well as greenhouse
gases, better protection of trees, safer parking for schools and encouragement
of alternatives to driving where possible. I would support Northam Town
Council taking over management of Northam Burrows.
I have put many items on the agenda at Northam Town Council including
supporting Fair Trade, the Sustainable Communities Bill to protect local
libraries, post offices and shops, writing to our MP and the District
Council about sustainability issues and voting against Genetically Modified
crops. I have consistently supported residents’ calls for a public
toilet in Northam - which we have finally achieved - and for pedestrian
crossings: we finally have one on Atlantic Way but also need one on Churchill
Road. There are six speed-reducing signs being put up in the area. I
organised the planting on the Heywood Road roundabout which will look
even better after a few years’ growth.
I won't be claiming many expenses (councillors claim 40p a mile for cars)
as I will travel by bike or share lifts. I believe that Councillors should
only be paid their allowance (just under £300 per month after tax)
when they attend meetings.
I would encourage increasing jobs in the area - perhaps the struggling
Appledore shipyard could make renewable energy devices like tidal turbines
- there are possibilities for these off Hartland Point and at Lynton
as well as all round the country.
We live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Let's keep it that
way.
I would like the opportunity to represent you in a local and practical
way using my experience and dedication to fairness, integrity and the
environment at Torridge District Council.
The Green Party are fielding over 1,400 local candidates all across
England in this May's local elections. We currently have 93 councillors
at District level or above, and expect to gain many more seats this year.
