I am standing for election as I feel passionately that we need working people to be active in our local politics. Greener local government will lead to savings. Our environment is precious to us. It is often difficult to balance home, work and public duty but I have been able to do this as a Town Councillor for Great Torrington. Local Democracy and good representative government is key. I applaud the work that Peter Christie has done as a Green Councillor and with more Green Councillors, this will help to save waste and the environment. Every aspect must be considered especially the consumption of fuel. Policies must be put in place to protect wildlife - this can be done through planning policies. The building of vibrant communities is important - I always do my shopping locally there is very little that cannot be bought in Great Torrington.
jonhooper@northdevongreens.org.uk I work from home as a self-employed website developer. I also work for the Association of Green Councillors, promoting the best ideas of several hundred Green Councillors throughout England. I am a founder member of North Devon’s Green Business Forum, now serving as its membership officer. After returning from University in Southampton, I did voluntary work teaching climbing at a local secondary school, and helped win a Lottery grant to fund a climbing wall for the local club. I enjoy walking, nature photography, allotment gardening, playing guitar, reading and watching films. I have had experience speaking at council planning meetings and recently represented the Green Party at a Public Inquiry on a proposed local wind farm. I believe local Government has a vital part to play in tackling Climate Change, and helping local people to reduce their own Carbon emissions – for example by providing free insulation. We need action now.
The Green Party are fielding over 1,400 local candidates all across England in this May's local elections. We currently have 93 councillors at District level or above, and expect to gain many more seats this year.Your Green Party Candidates for North Devon:You may also like to visit North Devon District Council's "Candidate's Profiles" page and "Parish Candidates" page Your Green Party Candidates for Torridge:
